Can Pet Owners Find Relief and Comfort in their Grieving Process with Self-Directed Grief Resource Tools? 

Brief summary: In this study each participant will receive a resource tool designed to aid in supporting their experience of grief. There will be three different resource tools under evaluation in this study, and participants will be randomly assigned to the resource tool they evaluate.

Details: Participants will complete two study questionnaires: one prior to receiving group assignment and one at completion of participation in the study. Time commitment is be self-directed, and takes place over the course of 30 days. Resource tools may include a daily e-mail with activity instruction (10-20 minutes daily), or a single e-mail containing instructions or resources for self-directed participation. At the conclusion of the study (completion of pre-study and post-study questionnaire) participants will be given the option to utilize any of the resources evaluated by the study. There is no monetary compensation provided, but the estimated combined value of resources that are shared will be >$500. 

Value to the pet owner community: The information gathered in this study provide’s the veterinary and veterinary social work community valuable information in providing better support for pet owners experiencing loss. It also aids in the development of tools to guide them through this important phase of the human animal bond and provides .

Qualifying for the study: To qualify for the study, participants should have experienced the death of a beloved pet in the recent (6 months) past. Study participants are allowed and encouraged to utilize all other resources of value to them in the grieving process. They will not be excluded from the study if they are using resources outside those the study provides. Participants should be willing to consider and evaluate the resources provided over the span of the 30 day study period as part of the study requirements.
